Review 2025 / Preview 2026
Dear residents of the Bröbberow community,
Dear friends of our community,
December 2025 Christmas and the New Year are just around
the corner. As every year, I would like to take this
opportunity to look back on the developments and projects of
our community in 2025 and also give an outlook for the
coming year, 2026. A key focus of our work in 2025 was on
public spaces and municipal infrastructure. The progress on
the planned footpath on the main street in Bröbberow is
particularly noteworthy. After intensive consultations, an
initial renovated section, and preliminary planning work,
important prerequisites have been met, bringing us
significantly closer to realizing this project. Even though
not all steps have been completed, this represents a
significant improvement for traffic safety and pedestrian
access within the village. The renovated village pond and
fire pond in Klein Grenz has proven its worth and is
functioning perfectly. As announced, the maintenance of
the tree population continued throughout the entire
municipality. Necessary pruning of the poplar trees along
the Klein Grenzer Chaussee served traffic safety and, with
its compensatory plantings of winter linden trees,
simultaneously the long-term development of a healthy and
diverse tree population. Similarly, several repairs and
upgrades were needed in the area of street lighting to
improve safety during the darker months and ensure reliable
operation. The Beke Bridge in Klein Grenz, which was
renovated by the municipality of Bröbberow in 2000 and
provides pedestrians and cyclists with access to Ziesendorf,
Bad Doberan, and Rostock, shines in new splendor after
extensive maintenance work. Repairs were necessary due to
several defects in the wooden decking to guarantee long-term
safety. An important, though less visible, issue was the
municipal heat planning, which we initiated together with
the other municipalities in our district in accordance with
legal requirements. The results of this process will serve
as a basis for decisions regarding future heat supply in the
coming years and are an important building block for the
sustainable development of our municipality. Decentralized
solutions will form the basis for our villages. The same
applies to the revision of the Regional Spatial Development
Program of the Planning Association of the Rostock Region,
which we have followed closely in order to be able to assess
possible effects on our community at an early stage. The
Bröbberow wind energy zone is not currently included in the
plan. In November 2025, we provided information about this
at a well-attended public meeting. The possibility of
expanding solar energy in the form of agrivoltaics in our
community was also presented. The numerous questions and
suggestions from residents demonstrated the high level of
interest in the further development of our community and
provide valuable input for the future work of the municipal
council. My sincere thanks again this year go to the
members of the volunteer fire department, the staff of our
daycare center, the municipal workers, the council members,
and all the knowledgeable residents who dedicate themselves
with commitment and energy to our beautiful and vibrant
community. I would also like to thank the clubs,
initiatives, institutions and all helpers who enrich
community life in Bröbberow through their participation, be
it at diverse and wonderful cultural events, at the meetings
of senior citizens, in the various social institutions or in
church and village life. Looking ahead to 2026, many of
these issues will continue to be relevant. The pedestrian
walkway on the main street remains a key project, as does
the ongoing maintenance of green spaces and trees, along
with necessary work on the street lighting. We will also
continue to monitor developments in spatial planning and the
question of the community hall with care and responsibility.
To successfully tackle the tasks ahead, one thing remains
crucial: the participation of the people who live here. In
this spirit, I would like to extend my warmest
encouragement, as always, to get involved, because a vibrant
community thrives on the engagement of its residents.
Participation and involvement are expressly desired; please
feel free to contact us if you would like to contribute.
True to the motto, "A community thrives not on what it has,
but on what its people are willing to do for one another",
let us look to the future with optimism. Thank you for
your trust and the excellent cooperation during the past
year. For the upcoming holidays, I wish you and your
families a merry Christmas and a healthy, peaceful and happy
New Year 2026.
Sincerely,
Steffen Marklein Mayor of the
municipality of Bröbberow

Due to the fact that our community belongs to the Schwaan
office, the only former »artists' colony in Mecklenburg, our
ideas about the careful economic and tourist development in
the area of the Beketal (tributary of the Warnow near
Rostock) are very important to us.
The district of Groß Grenz was painted several times by the
artists of the artists' colony because of the historical
buildings and the »church from the 14th century. The
sensitive restorations, the thatched Low German hall house
with ancillary building (17th century), the »old dairy, the
former village school, the old syringe house (all 19th
century), the customs house (18th century) as a residential
building and of course ours The community center are
important milestones in village renewal for our community.
...............................................................................................
The multitude of well-preserved and interesting farms in
small and large Grenz always invites you to take an
interesting walk. The redesign of the former »manor complex
in Bröbberow is a priority task for the coming years.
The new fire brigade building is available to the fire
fighters, the “Kiek In” cultural association and the
residents of the community for public life.
The community is located directly on the "Europe -
Copenhagen - Berlin Cycle Route", which is very popular.
Should our beautiful landscape invite one or the other
cyclist to a longer stay - no problem - we have various
accommodations and »holiday apartments on offer.
In the municipality of Bröbberow, great importance is
attached to the restoration and sensitive maintenance of the
village ponds, field hedges, avenues, wetlands, the Beke
river valley and the »Sölle. They are supposed to create
natural habitats and improve the quality of life of the
residents. A main focus of the community work is the
constant development of green in the form of trees, hedges
and micro-biotopes.
Alternative energies are used in the form of geothermal
systems in all public buildings and in several private
households. Photovoltaic systems are also on the advance and
are receiving positive attention
The municipality of Bröbberow is 15 km and 20 minutes by car
south of Rostock, 7 km from the BAB 20 (Baltic Sea motorway
Hamburg - Stettin), 14 km from the BAB 19 (Berlin -
Rostock-Überseehafen) and 20 km to the west Rostock-Laage
Airport.
Since we rely on long-term sustainable concepts, the entire
road and path network has been renovated in recent years as
part of a land consolidation process. Our local companies
can quickly reach the cities of Rostock, Berlin and Hamburg,
and our residents and guests are at the sea in 25 minutes.
Good shopping and dining options are only 4 km away in the
town of Schwaan, as are the S-Bahn to Rostock or Güstrow,
the school, the town hall, a sports hall and a boat landing
stage on the Warnow.
In the district of Groß Grenz, a sport, game and festival
area was built or renovated. The community center with the
»kindergarten for 99 places was opened on June 1, 2005. It
also offers space for community events and for young people,
seniors, sports groups or similar initiatives.
The municipality of Bröbberow has been redeveloped in
essential areas in recent years and has changed its image
very pleasantly. In future, however, more efforts must be
made to ensure the performance of the community. Here ideas
and activities are needed that go beyond what is currently
available. The development of the last few years has shown
us that, on the one hand, financial resources were very
important in order to make up the gap of decades, but that
the social commitment of the people in your environment is
indispensable.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Steffen Marklein
